The meaning behind it

Therapy for your skin and for your energy body, that’s what skin therapy is all about. Especially the skin on our face can oftentimes mirror what’s really going on inside. It offers a roadmap decoding the body and mind’s silent language. With Skin Therapy’s facial massage, a lot of tension and blockages can be released and skin improved. Founder Jolien Schepers explains what skin therapy entails as a holistic wellness modality.

Why do you call what you do skin therapy?

‘Because it’s not an average treatment, it works therapeutically. Therapy for your skin and for your energy body. We draw up a long-term plan to reach your skin goals with facial massage, maybe some facial reflexology or a natural facelift – depending on the individual. Skin requires love and maintenance. At the same time, the condition of your skin can tell a lot about your emotional wellbeing. Certain allergies, even the look in your eyes. As skin specialists we work very intimately with our clients, skin-on-skin contact. This requires a sense of trust and we are here to listen if you like. So, in the end it’s healing really.’

How does facial massage itself work therapeutically?

‘When I do a solid connective tissue massage and use certain pressure points, I can literally feel where there’s tension. We can unknowingly hold so much tension in our face. During a treatment I can see blockages in the skin – from a dull appearance to clogged pores and stiff areas. I help release all that with firm massage strokes or a deep cleanse, but also by asking what’s on someone’s mind. It’s important to sense whether someone wants to open up or just keep to themselves and relax – both is fine. Most of all, I want to envelop anyone coming by in a sense of belonging and warmth. We’re constantly living in our head, don’t really know how to ground ourselves anymore. I like to turn that around, even if it’s just for 60 minutes on the massage table.’

Facial massage for sculpted features and a radiant glow, that is your signature. How does this work exactly?

‘You can effectively reduce dullness, redness, visibly sagging skin with facial massage. I believe facial massage is key to help reduce stress in the face. Release, and have the energy flow again. Technically speaking, we can activate skin with facial massage. Stimulate blood circulation, balancing out sebum production, breaking up connective tissue so the skin goes into repair mode and afterwards looks much more firm, full and sculpted. When you release tension in, say, the jawline your facial expression will look instantly more relaxed and beautiful.’

How does our face relate to the rest of our body?

‘Meridians run through your feet and through your face. The body is connected through energetic channels, known as meridians, in which energy flows to and from organ systems in the body. This has been scientifically proven. Your jaw line relates to your large intestines, the under eyes to your kidneys and so on. Oftentimes clients find that their stomach starts making a little noise, because digestion is activated. They can feel a little faint if there’s a deep block somewhere. Or they just zone out and say afterwards: “It was like I was floating; I wasn’t even there.” It’s all connected.’
